What is the Firebee Parka?

The Firebee is a jacket for those wanting insulation for the highest summits, freezing conditions and belays in the foulest weather. Let's just say, you won't be cold while wearing it.

What is it made of?

Insulation: Arguably the most important part of this jacket is the insulation itself, therefore it has to be something pretty special. Arc'teryx cram the Firebee with 230g of the highest quality 850 fill-power Grey Goose Down, ensuring warmth for just about any situation. Down is the warmest and most packable insulation in the world for it's weight, therefore it's the most obvious choice for a jacket of this calibre. Interestingly, the Firebee is Arc'teryx's warmest jacket for its weight.

Outer fabric: Surrounding all of this super high-quality insulation is a Gore Thermium membrane; this provides a completely windproof and highly water resistant barrier against the elements. This is then backed up by a full seam-taping process to ensure you stay dry in all but the worst rain. Although this membrane is not technically waterproof, we've found in real-world situations moisture is very unlikely to pass through.

What are the features?

Traditionally, down jackets would always feature the smooth side on the inside of the jacket and the baffled side facing outwards. Arc'teryx cleverly swapped this around and called it 'bi-directional internal volume pleats'. Essentially, this maximises the warmth and loft of the down as you move, whilst also keeping the water and wind repellent fabric on the outside, where it belongs! Using the Firebee for climbing in high altitude situations is more than reasonable too thanks to the helmet compatible StormHood. This hood will fit a helmet underneath without an issue, while insulation surrounding your head keeps you warm while stationary. Adjustment of this super warm hood can be carried out even with the use of mittens or gloves.

Pockets wise, you're given two insulated hand pockets with water tight zippers, one internal dump pocket for large items and one internal zipped pocket ideal for a mobile phone or keys. Note, these water tight zips are highly water resistant but not waterproof. Keep your phone in an interal pocket to avoid tears.

How does it fit?

It's a tricky one to explain, but the Firebee doesn't fit or feel like any other jacket. As soon as you slip your arm through the sleeve, you're hugged by the inwards facing baffles and instantly feel warm and cosy. The length of the Firebee is nice and long, even for those over 6ft, while the shoulders allow plenty of room for climbing at altitude.

Where does it fit in the layering system?

The Firebee, as you may have guessed, is designed to be worn as an outer layer. It's ideal for belay stops, high altitude active use and just about anywhere which requires one of the warmest jackets in existence.
